BSc in Chemistry

Overview

Only one BSc degree programme is offered by the department. The department gives opportunities for professionalization by offering three professional minors in materials science, industrial chemistry and pharmaceutical chemistry. To qualify for a BSc in Chemistry, students must obtain a minimum of one hundred and eighty (180) credits from duly prescribed courses

Admission Requirements:

Besides the general University admissions requirements, candidates seeking to read for a BSc degree in Chemistry must have pass grades in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry at the GCE O' level. At the GCE A' level, they must possess good pass grades in at least two science subjects, one of which must be Chemistry (minimum D grade). Candidates with equivalent certificates will also be considered

MSc in Chemistry

Overview:

The Department of Chemistry offers a unique programme dealing with all aspects of chemistry including fundamental ideas about Inorganic, Organic, Physical and Analytical Chemistry, as well as Industrial Chemistry. This programme also includes fundamentals of Mathematics, Computer Science and Industrial Management which are essential to an industrial chemist. The main objectives of the MSc in Chemistry and MSc in Applied Chemistry are: to impart knowledge in fundamental aspects of all branches of the Chemistry with basic ideas about Mathematics, Computer Science , Economics & Management applications in Chemistry and Applied Chemistry, to acquire basic knowledge in the specialized areas like Heterocyclic Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Green Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry, Dye Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Paper & Pulp Chemistry, Textile Chemistry, etc and in industries like Heavy & Fine Chemical, Pharmaceutical, Agrochemical, Paper & Pulp, Textile, Plastic & Polymer, Fuel & Energy, Cement & Ceramic, Food Industries, and to acquire deep knowledge in the study of Industrial Chemistry including energy & mass balance, flow charts, flow sheets, spectral techniques, separation techniques, analytical techniques involved in this field. Students in the MSc degree programme shall: register full-time for four semesters from the date of first registration for the programme; pursue a full-time internal program for two semesters from the date of first registration for the programme; obtain a minimum of ninety (90) credits from duly prescribed courses before embarking on the research for his dissertation; present at least two research seminars which is open to other MSc students of the Department; submit and defend an MSc dissertation on a research topic in the desired area of specialization as approved by the Faculty on the recommendation of the Department

Admission Requirements:

In addition to all other criteria that shall be specified by the Postgraduate School, applicants for admission must have a First Class or Second Class Upper degree in Chemistry. Candidates with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 may be considered, subject to the number of places available. Candidates with other backgrounds may be considered for admission, depending on the candidate’s background and desired specialty. All applications must be accompanied by a recommendation letter from the intended supervisor who shall be any person satisfying the PG School criteria to supervise MSc dissertation.

PhD in Chemistry

Overview:

The PhD programme in chemistry has four main options (Organic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry and Analytical Chemistry). The training seeks to provide high-level manpower needed in research institutes and institutions of higher education. In order to gain experience in teaching, all postgraduate students are required to participate in tutorials and laboratory practical training of undergraduates under the supervision of Faculty members. Candidates must acquire the skills needed for conceiving and writing research proposals of high quality. They should be able to initiate and carry out research projects to completion successfully. Students are expected to earn at least 180 credits upon completion of studies.

Admission Requirements:

To be admitted into the PhD degree programme, the applicant must be a holder of a good MSc degree with a thesis or its equivalent in chemistry. Depending on their backgrounds, candidates may be required to register for other courses to remedy deficiencies, if necessary.
