BSc in Applied Mathematics

Overview

The specialised programme in Mathematics (Pure Mathematics) is for those students who want a deep knowledge of Mathematics and who hope to pursue Mathematical research as a career. The specialised programme in Applied Mathematics or Mathematics and Statistics is for those students who are interested in the fundamental knowledge of Mathematics with application to real world problems. The specialised programme in Mathematics as a major with a minor in another field is meant for those students who have a strong interest in Mathematics but with career goals in the minor area. Additionally, students have the possibility to take a combined major in Mathematics and Computer Science (B.Sc. Combined (honours) in Mathematics and Computer Science). This specialised programme takes four years.

Duration:

3 years

Admission Requirements:

In addition to University and Faculty requirements, students who wish to enrol for a BSc in Mathematics should have obtained at least a D grade in Mathematics at the GCE A’ Level (or equivalent) or a special recommendation of the Department. It is the student's responsibility to choose courses in accordance with Departmental and Faculty regulations. All students intending to pursue a degree programme in Mathematics should consult the Department which provides advice on such important matters as available specialised programmes, course sequences, possible combinations of Major and Minor fields, and recommended undergraduate studies leading to graduate studies.

MSc in Probability and Statistics

Overview:

The Master’s Degree in Probability and Statistics offers two options- Probability and Statistics. The programme aims at training Statisticians and Probabilists for the steadily increasing demand for researchers and other professionals in these fields and to provide prerequisites for research in mathematics with emphasis on Probability and Statistics. This latter aspect is of great significance in the context of our society where there is a severe shortage of trainers. The Statistics option is structured to be a combination of a professional degree programme which prepares students for the job market and, for those of these students who are interested, for post-gradute studies in any field in which Statistics is a prerequisite. The Statistics option is thus composed of courses in probability, theoretical Statistics and applied statistics that provide knowledge and understanding of statistical methods and their practical applications. The Probability option, seeks to offer state-of-the-art instruction in Probability. Apart from providing theoretical background to students who wish to acquire knowledge in Probability for application in other branches of Mathematics and its related Sciences, the programme also seeks to provide the necessary training to those students whose ultimate goal is to receive a terminal degree in Probability. The Probability option is structured to be a blend of courses in theoretical and applied Probability that provide broad knowledge and understanding of the subject.

Duration:

2 years

Admission Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics with a GPA of at least 2.5 on a scale of 4 or a Bachelor’s degree in a Mathematical Science with a Minor in Statistics with a GPA of at least 3.

MSc. Applied Mathematics

Overview:

The Master of Science degree program in Applied Mathematics is designed for students with an undergraduate degree in Mathematics or an appropriate mathematical science, who wish to acquire a solid foundation in applied mathematics. The programme focuses on computational tools of modern applied mathematics and the mathematical theory underlying these tools. It provides a solid foundation for doctoral study in mathematics or for a career in teaching, industry, or government. In addition to an undergraduate degree in a mathematical science, applicants for the Applied Mathematics program should have completed courses in multivariable calculus, ordinary differential equations and linear algebra. Students should also have some experience with computer programming or the use of computational software packages. Courses taken in Partial Differential equations and Physics are an advantage. Applicants with insufficient preparation may be admitted on the condition that they complete certain prerequisite work to be specified by the Department at the time of admission. Each candidate for the M. Sc. Degree Programme shall have one or two Supervisors. The Supervisors must have a PhD Degree and must be at least of the rank of Lecturer. M. Sc. Applied Mathematics • Specialties: Numerical Analysis Mathematical Modelling Operations Research

Duration:
