BSc in Zoology

Overview

This program ranges from studying molecules to that of animal communities. It is geared towards giving the students good foundation not only in descriptive biology and zoology in particular, but also a practical approach, based on the understanding of underlying physical, chemical and mathematical principles. This program also defines the organization of the whole life and its evolution in all its aspects, and to apprehend the unity this underlies the diversity of animal structures. The students have to understand the architectural principles on which living organisms are constructed the functioning of the various parts, and the mechanism responsible for the development of their complex structure. In addition with the study of the relations and interactions between plants and animals and their environment. Moreover, this program introduced the students to the applications of Zoology to other pure and applied biological disciplines such as agriculture, animal husbandry, Medicine (medical and Veterinary), Applied Entomology, Medical Parasitology, environment, food and textile industries, etc.

Duration:

3 years

Admission Requirements:

The candidate must have passed the G.C.E ordinary level in at least 5 papers including English and Mathematics, must have at least two G.C.E Advanced level papers, one in Biology and the other in another science subject.

MSc in Zoology

Overview:

The Applied Zoology Programme is divided into two parts. The first part provides the theoretical and practical training that enables the student to master the detail principles of animal biology and the second part mainly equips the student either in human animal physiology or in entomology. In this programme, the student will study life phenomena at all levels, from molecules to cellulular with special emphasis on the human body. The major focus of Animal Physiology is on the analysis of different aspects of the functions of biological molecules, organisms and entities. The techniques and methodologies of Animal Physiology have wide applications in the biological, medical and related sciences. Human physiologists for example work in Universities, industries, Medical Centres/Colleges, Research Institutes, Government Organizations etc. In entomology, the student will be able to identify the ecological habitats and niches factors of the environment affecting the development of insects, determine the population dynamics, community and biodiversity of animals; diversity and adaptive features of insects; identification and systematics. The Applied zoology student will be able to explain molecular evolution, phylogenetic and natural selection of organisms. Attention is paid to application of Zoological concepts to improve human and animal health, increase agricultural products and their conservation, and enhance environmental management. The candidate will be able of Initiating and conducting innovative research in Animal Physiology or Entomology.

Duration:

2 years

Admission Requirements:

Admission into the programme shall be open to graduates from any recognized University, having a Bachelor of Science Degree in Zoology with honours. Candidates admitted shall be required to register for a minimum of 120 credits.
